The Kwara State Chapter of the Association of Nigerian Authors (Kwara ANA) calls for submissions on its Girl-Child Rights Creative Work Compendium Titled: GLASS ROSES.

Unpublished original works in genres of Poetry, Prose, Drama, Book review, Article critique, and Visual arts are eligible for submission.

Writers Space Africa (WSA), an international literary magazine, published by the African Writers Development Trust (AWDT), is calling for submissions for its 26th edition (February Edition) under the theme “Love in Africa”.

Anase Writer Society and Muse for Peace Foundation are inviting poets and writers to submit their works from either of Poetry, Article or Essay, as tributes for the late Kofi Annan, the great peace activist and exemplary leader, who was passionate and dedicated to world peace and equality in his life time.

The submission which closes on Sunday, the 30th of September, 2018, is open to authors or poets of any nationality.

Any interested poet or writer is permitted to submit only one poem (30 lines Maximum) or one article/essay.

Email subject of the submission should read "Tribute to Annan", while the submission should be placed in the body of mail, as file attachment is not allowed.

Entrant is also expected to include his or her Name, Country, short Bio and Contact details in the body of mail to be sent to the mail welcoming the submission: kofiannantribute9@gmail.com.

Born on 8th of April, 1938; Kofi Atta Annan was a Ghanaian diplomat who served as the seventh Secretary-General of the United Nations, from January 1997 to December 2006 and also the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. He was the founder and chairman of the Kofi Annan Foundation, as well as chairman of The Elders, an international organization founded by Nelson Mandela. He died on 18 August, 2018.

The Emma Press has called for submissions of poems about insects, for a children’s anthology to be edited by Fran Long and Dr. Isabel Galleymore.

The anthology will be part of the publisher’s continuing series of themed anthologies of poetry for children. It accepts international entry, as long as such entrant have bought an Emma Press book or ebook.

Poets are invited to send in up to 3 poems, which should be suitable for readers aged 8+, and which will enthuse youngsters about the wonders of insects by either taking the readers on a journey of discovery to learn about insect anatomy, or inspire young readers about insect super powers. Or the ones that could help children identify and classify insects.

The Emma Press accepts previously published poems as long as such entrant hold the rights to the poems and can license such to them. It also accepts translations, and translators can submit multiple proposals as long as they are one translation per author. The Emma Press offers each anthologised poet two complimentary copies of the book and a discount on future purchases of the book.

How to submit to Insect Poems

You must be a member of the Emma Press Club. Meaning you must have bought a book or ebook from the Emma Press website in this calendar year, since January 1, 2018, or already have been accepted into the club.

Place a maximum of three poems, each no longer than 65 lines, into a single Word/PDF/ODF document and only include text in the document and not images. Make sure your submission is anonymous. Also make sure you haven’t put your name or any biographical notes in the document and be aware that you will be asked to rename your document at a certain stage within the Google form.

The Goethe-Institut has invited aspiring African writers of all ages interested in writing for Young Adults (YA) to submit short stories, 3,000 to 5,000 words in length, in Kiswahili, English or French.

Afroyoungadult, published by the Goethe-Institut, will feature Young Adults (YA) stories.

Selected authors will be published in an anthology and will participate in workshops in February 2019.

The anthology will be available in Kiswahili, English, and French, and launched at the 2019 Ake Festival.

If interested, send your short story to afroyoungadult@gmail.com with a short biography and your preferred city for the workshop.

The workshops will take place in the following languages in the following cities:

KISWAHILI: Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

FRENCH: Lome, Togo; Dakar, Senegal.

ENGLISH: Accra, Ghana; Kigali, Rwanda; Lagos, Nigeria; Nairobi, Kenya; Johannesburg, South Africa.

The deadline for submissions is 30th of November this year. Announcement of selected entries will be made on 3rd of January, 2018. The workshops will take place between 11th of February to 15th of February, 2019.

Therefore, it's pertinent that only writers who will be in Africa and can travel to attend their chosen workshop should submit to the call.

Submit to the Emerging Writer’s Prize in Fiction, a prize run by The Arkansas International. Send in your single prose work, not exceeding 7,500 words.

The contest is open to writers who have not yet published a full-length book, but will accept writers with a book forthcoming before May 1, 2019 and those with chapbooks.

The prize incurs a $20 entry fee, which includes a one-year subscription. However, it is free to current subscribers.

Interested writer may submit more than once. However, such writer must pay $20 for each new entry.

The Emerging Writer’s Prize in Fiction only accepts previously unpublished works. It will consider all works for inclusion in the print journal.

Stanford professor, Adam Johnson, will judge the contest and he will judge all entries blindly.

Therefore, entrants should not include name, contact information, or cover letter in their uploaded document. They should also double space their work and save it as a single .doc, .docx, or .pdf file.

All entries should be turned in on or before October, 20, 2018, as submission has been on since August, 20.

Submissions can be uploaded online via The Arkansas International’s Submittable.

Close friends of the judge or recently affiliated with the University of Arkansas (studied or worked there within the past 4 years) are excluded from submitting to the competition.

Submissions are invited from writers in Africa for the 2018 African Writers Award, an annually organized award by African Writers Development Trust (AWDT) as part of the African Writers Conference (AWC).

The conference annually brings writers of African descent together to network, create opportunities and sustain a conversation that would press forward the shared interests of African writers.

The theme of this year’s conference, slated to hold in Abuja by December this year, is “Re-imagining African Literature: New Voices, New Narratives in the Fight for the Girl Child”.

Therefore, writers can send in their flash fiction, short stories, children stories, or poems.

The maximum lengths for all categories' submissions include:

Flash fiction - 300 words max.

Children stories - 1,500 words max. Illustrations could be sent too, but optional.

Short stories - 2,500 words to 5,000 words max.

Poetry - 30 lines max.

Submissions must be in English and must never have been published anywhere. All entries must be themed-based. You are only allowed to submit one entry per writer. Your submission must include a bio and picture, including links to social media pages, websites, etc.

You would submit your work by uploading it on the African Writers Conference (AWC) page. Click HERE and scroll to the bottom of the page to upload your work.

Four writers of African descent will win an award each with prize money. The award will be presented at the 2018 AWC dinner and awards night scheduled for December 1, 2018, at 6 p.m. The venue will be communicated later.

Nyashadzashe Chikumbu, Edith Knight Magak, Kolabomi Adeko, Nahida Esmail, and Anthony Onugba will judge this year’s submissions.

The deadline for entry submissions is October 13, 2018.

The National Executive Council of the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) has announced a call for submissions for the 2018 ANA Review.

In a statement issued by the National Secretary of the Association, Dr. Ofonime Inyang, interested entrants should direct their submissions for the 37th edition of the Review to "the Association’s Editorial Board headed by the General Secretary."

According to the statement, submissions are expected in four genres: Poetry—No more than six poems per submission; Prose—Short stories or fiction excerpts must be under 4,000 words; Essays—Academic and literary essays on subjects related to literature are welcome and must be under 5,000 words; and Drama—Skits only, under 3,000 words.

All submissions are expected to be sent as MS Word attachments via email to

titiaofonime@gmail.com, bearing details such as: Name, Genre, State Chapter, Contact, and Telephone of the writer, on the first page.

All submissions to the Review closes on Friday, 3th of August, 2018.

The ANA Review, published yearly by the Association, is a journal that seeks to assess the pulse of contemporary Nigerian and African literary writing and critical discourse in the field.

The Ake Arts and Book Festival has announced a call for entries for the 2018 edition of their annual journal, Ake Review.

According to the statement issued, the theme for this year’s festival which is the 6th Edition is: Fantastical Futures, focused on a re-imagined African future.
